City South Leadership

In 1986, the South San Antonio Chamber of Commerce began looking at ways to better identify, acquaint and motivate potential community leaders to address the continuing needs and challenges of south San Antonio.  The program we now call City South Leadership, renamed to reflect Mayor Ed Garza’s, City South Initiative, has evolved over the past 20 years and is as dynamic as our community.

City South Leadership is a nine month program, which challenges its’ participants to study the changing dynamics of south San Antonio and to commit to aiding us in building stronger ties with our schools, neighborhoods and churches.  Topics covered during the nine months include, but are not limited to: Economic and Community Development; Boards and Commissions; Leadership through Volunteerism; Partnerships, Internal and External Relations.  Participants are exposed to a variety of venues, speakers and tours during the course of our program.

What’s more, personal leadership skills are strengthened through exercises including Public Speaking, Scholarship Drives, and studying The 21 Irrefutable Laws of Leadership by John Maxwell.

City South Leadership is an aggressive program for those willing to make the commitment to the Southern Sector.

The 2005 City South Leadership Class created a legacy of gifting scholarships to graduating Seniors from Harlandale, McCollum and South San High Schools. Leadership scholarships are awarded on a competitive basis to Seniors who demonstrate outstanding potential for leadership or civic duty. One or more non-renewable scholarships of $1000.00 each will be offered.

The original Scholarships were created as the City South Leadership Scholarships, but in 2006 were renamed The Douglas H. Carter Scholarships in honor of the City South Leadership Class Committee Chair, Douglas Carter. Douglas has been the driving force behind the continued success and growth of the Leadership Class for the past several years and although he will no longer Chair the Leadership Committee he will remain a vital part of the South San Antonio Chamber of Commerce.

If you are interested in joining the 2007 City South Leadership Class or applying for the Scholarships please use the links below to fill out an application. Instructions are included for filling out and submitting the applications. Please read and follow all instructions carefully.
